The Bacterial Degradation of Catechol.
1. Two strains of Pseudomonas were grown with phenol and used to prepare cell extracts that metabolized catechol with the transient formation of 2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde. 2. One of these preparations catalysed the conversion of 1mol. of catechol into 1mol. each of formate and 4-hydroxy-2-oxovalerate. 3. A method for the determination of 4-hydroxy-2-oxovalerate is described, together with s...
متن کاملThe Degradation of Heparin by Bacterial Enzymes
Extracts of acetone powders of Flavobacterium heparinum which have been adapted to heparin catalyze a rather extensive degradation of this mucopolysaccharide. This ‘Lheparinase” activity is due to the presence in the extract of a sulfamidase, a sulfesterase, and at least one glycosidase (1, 2). Such extracts also catalyze the hydrolysis of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate. This paper com...
متن کاملDegradation of Bacterial Surface Carbohydrates by Virus-associated Enzymes
Virus-associated glycanases acting on bacterial capsular polysaccharides or on the 0-specific side chains of cell wall lipopolysaccharides, carboxylic ester and amide hydrolases removing 0— and N—acetyl residues from these glycans, as well as lyases for bacterial 2xopolysaccharides are known to occur on bacteriophages for different bacterial species, notably for many belonging to the family of ...
متن کاملCellulose degradation by oxidative enzymes
Enzymatic degradation of plant biomass has attracted intensive research interest for the production of economically viable biofuels. Here we present an overview of the recent findings on biocatalysts implicated in the oxidative cleavage of cellulose, including polysaccharide monooxygenases (PMOs or LPMOs which stands for lytic PMOs), cellobiose dehydrogenases (CDHs) and members of carbohydrate-...
متن کاملCatechol and phenol degradation by a methanogenic population of bacteria.
An anaerobic population of bacteria became acclimated to catechol and phenol in 32 and 18 days, respectively. Evidence from carbon balance measurements indicates that the aromatic ring is cleaved and that the products are stoichiometrically fermentable to methane and carbon dioxide.
